Some night drives are for thinking, some are for singing badly to the radio and some are simply for the view. This one, high on a winding mountain road with a whole city glittering in the valley below, was supposed to be the third kind. Then the headlights caught a pair of glowing eyes on the asphalt.
Most people would have locked the doors. Our driver did something much braver, or much less sensible, depending on who you ask. She stepped out in a light summer dress and heels, the car door still open behind her, and walked slowly towards the long-legged spotted shape standing at the edge of the road.
It was a cheetah. Not a house cat, not a dog with an unusual coat, but a real, graceful, impossibly elegant cheetah, strolling along the curve as if it had an appointment. For a moment the two of them just looked at each other in the beam of the headlights.
Then the cat did something nobody expected. Instead of bolting into the bushes, it walked straight up to her, rubbed its head against her hands and sat down like a giant purring pet. By the end of the clip she is crouching on the road with her arms around its neck, laughing, while the city lights twinkle in the background like a postcard.
Here is the secret behind the scene, and it’s an important one: this was not a random wild animal. The cheetah was raised by people, used to human contact and accompanied by its keepers, who were waiting just out of frame. Cheetahs are generally among the calmer big cats, but a genuinely wild one would never offer a cuddle, and nobody should ever try this with an unknown animal.
Knowing that doesn’t make the clip any less magical. There is something wonderful about the contrast: the quiet road, the soft dress, the glossy car and the wild, spotted shoulders of an animal built to run at more than one hundred kilometres per hour, choosing instead to sit perfectly still for a hug.
The headlights add their own drama, painting the cat’s spotted coat in warm gold and turning the scene into something that looks almost staged, even though the reactions are clearly genuine.
The video has been shared by countless people who all ask the same question: is it real? It is. Is it normal? Absolutely not. And that, really, is why we can’t stop watching it.
