Europe’s Hottest Summer Killed More Than 50,000 People in Its Cities, Study Finds

Europe’s summer of 2026 was not only uncomfortably hot; it was deadly. A study published on 23 October in the journal Nature Health estimates that warmer temperatures caused 50,391 deaths across 854 European cities during June, July and August. The research team, led by climate scientist Clair Barnes of Imperial College London, attributes roughly 65 percent of those deaths to human-caused climate change.

The researchers stress that their figure is probably an underestimate. The count leaves out a heat wave that struck in May, and the cities in the analysis cover only about 40 percent of Europe’s population. Many smaller towns and rural areas, where older residents often live without air conditioning, are not included at all.

Heat is often called a silent killer because its victims rarely appear in disaster statistics. Most deaths happen at home, among older people and those with heart, lung or kidney conditions, and they are usually recorded under other causes. Studies like this one use the gap between expected and actual deaths during hot periods to reveal the true toll.

The findings fit a wider picture of an extreme season. In Switzerland, for example, the glacier monitoring network GLAMOS has reported that June to August were the hottest months on record there, driving one of the worst years for glacier melt ever measured.

For city leaders, the message is practical. Shaded streets, more trees, cool public rooms, early-warning systems and regular checks on elderly neighbours can save lives when the thermometer climbs. Simple habits matter too: drinking enough water, avoiding the midday sun and keeping homes as cool as possible. As summers keep getting hotter, heat planning is becoming as important for European cities as flood defences or winter road clearing.
